"Mid-America" Educators' Job Fair

Tuesday, February 26th, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Bone Student Center (Brown Ballroom, Circus and Spotlight Rooms, 1 West Lounge and Old Main) -- 200 districts have registered and that's a Full House!

Part of "Mid-America" fairs each day of this week across Illinois. Over the past three years, the Illinois State event has averaged more than 190 districts (and related agencies) and nearly 1000 candidates. School districts from throughout Illinois and across the U.S. annually visit the Illinois State University campus during the spring and fall semesters to recruit candidates for all careers related to education (through grade 12).   Typically up to 30% of the districts are from out-of-state.

As always, this event is open to all education and related majors (remember to bring a current ISU ID to register at the door), alumni, plus students from other universities! As in past years, student teachers should be able to negotiate a partial or full day off in order to attend.

  • Bring lots of resumes and expect professional, on-the-spot interviews with some district recruiters!
  • Dress more formally than you would for student teaching. Suits are recommended, but blazers/sport coats are also appropriate. Professional dress does make professional impressions.

Juniors are encouraged to attend to check out the marketplace in advance of their senior year, but preferably after lunch when the lines are shorter.  It's a great opportunity to:

  • See how a large job fair is organized.
  • Find out more about the job market in your field.
  • Talk directly to school recruiters about the teacher selection process; this can be especially valuable if there are districts attending in which you are keenly interested!!

Other "Mid-America" Educators' Job Fairs

  • Northern Illinois University - Monday, February 25
  • Eastern Illinois University - Wednesday, February 27
  • University of Illinois - Urbana/Champaign - Thursday, February 28
  • Northeastern Illinois University - Friday, February 29

Illinois State students who student teach during the spring semester in the Chicago area may attend the NIU or NEIU fairs on the Monday/Friday of this same week.  ISU seniors and alumni may attend any of these fairs.

Even if your major is not mentioned in the list of preferred majors, proactively discuss professional opportunities/ possibilities with the recruiters. Find out the range and variety of majors they typically employ. Reminder that current students should bring their IDs to speed registration at the door. Alumni please note that you are also most welcome to attend this Fair!

Be aware that some employers (at least 6) will be scheduling "Late Night Interviews" at the Fair, and conduct them in the Career Center (185 SSB) starting at 3:30!

Great opportunity to get ready for the pursuit of internships or full-time jobs.   All students in All majors welcome!  Featured keynote talk by Mr. Drew Butts, HR Manager for the Chicago region of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, an engaging and dynamic speaker. Plus there will be several prospective employers who regularly recruit at ISU on hand in the Brown Ballroom to provide "instant resume critiques", and to share their wisdom and answer YOUR questions about:

  • Making Great First Impressions at Job Fairs (Toby Atkinson, Cintas)
  • How to Win Over Recruiters in Interviews (Kris Dempsey, Target)
  • Skills That Get You Hired (Jill Kelm, Steak 'n Shake)

IWU-ISU Teacher Fair

January, Wednesday 16th, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Main Lounge of the Memorial Center, 104 University St., IWU campus.

Features large and/or growing suburban Chicago secondary and k-12 districts.

As of January 11, here are the 14 districts that have registered:  (Highland Park-Deerfield 113 and DuPage HS District 88 recently cancelled)

Geneva School District 304, Glenbrook HS District 225, Hinsdale Twp. HS District 86, Lake Park HS District 108, Kaneland Comm. Unit School District 302, Leyden HS District 212, Lyons Twp. HS District 204, Maine Twp. HS District 207, New Trier Twp. HS District 203, Oak Park - River Forest HS District 200, Oswego Comm. Unit School District 308, Plainfield Comm. Consolidated District 202, Twp. HS District 214 (Arlington Hts.), Yorkville Comm. Unit School District 115.

No matter what your major, the reps will talk with anyone who is interested in their district! It is an early opportunity to have one-to-one interviews with these prominent Chicagoland school districts. ISU seniors welcome at this 5th annual event - no pre-registration; bring plenty of resumes and "dress for success".  The recruiters certainly understand that students who attend likely are just beginning, or are preparing to begin, their student teaching experience.

Note: some of these districts will return for ISU's fair in late February, some will not. Most of the secondary districts will be in attendance at the Northwest Personnel Administrators' Fair (at College of DuPage and Glenbard So. High School from 9 to 3 on Saturday, February 2), but this event at IWU will probably have one-tenth the number of candidates in comparison to that fair!
