How does FERPA impact my relationship with the Career Center?

The University encourages parents and family members to be supportive of your student in their career search, to serve as a resource for your student, and to encourage your student to become a successful manager of their own education.

 

What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are "eligible students."

What does this mean for parents and family members of Illinois State students?

According to FERPA, Illinois State can only provide you with information about your students’ academic or disciplinary record if your student has given the University written permission. This policy also applies to conversation and advice provided to your student as a result of meetings with the Career Center staff or participation in Career Fairs or events.
