Where should students begin?
Deciding on a major/career is a big decision. The Illinois State University Career Counselors and staff are willing and available to assist students through this process. We would encourage students to review the resources below and schedule an appointment with a Career Counselor to discuss their interests and options.
Steps Students Can Take to Find the Right Major
- Visit the Find Your Major Web site
- Self-assessment - SIGI 3 and other self-assessment instruments help you gather information about yourself. This can assist you in making a decision about a major or career.

- Attend the ISU Major Fair held each spring semester
- Participate in Career Center workshops and events
- Take IDS 106 - Career Choice Class offered by Student Counseling Services
- Job shadow or participate in an informational interview with a professional working in the field that interests you.
Gain Experience/Skills Outside of the Classroom
- Explore and participate in an Internship/Co-op experience
- Join Registered Student Organizations or Professional Organizations
- Study Abroad
- Participate in a National Student Exchange program
- Part-time or Full-time positions related to/supportive of your field of study
